A Unique Construction Activity Successfully Completed During Erection of Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex

A unique activity of hoisting a 42-ton crane runway beam into the structure of the hull fabrication workshop was carried out in construction of Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex.

RDS Companies Group, the general contractor, spent around 2 weeks for engineering to hoist the oversized structure. The work was carried out by two cranes, and the complexity was the limited hook height—the hoisting was performed in the already roofed block while the beam was required to be installed just short of the roof.

“We with a group of engineers has meticulously developed and agreed a production schedule. We literally had to invent additional rigging alternatives”, Alexander Zdor, Construction Site Superintendent, shared the details. “And, after an extended and thorough check and preliminary trial, the hoisting went off without a hitch. It was the last and the most complex hoisting of heavy structural steel in this block”.

As of today equipment foundation, cast-in-place concrete floor and storm sewer works in the hull fabrication workshop are about to be completed. Installation of ventilation and heating system is underway. Interior finishing works, electrical network and lighting installation in the amenities complex near completion. Pipe routing in the wiring ducts and ventilation system and installation of outside utilities are ongoing. Preparatory foundation works for the reinforced concrete slab of the transit structural steel storage area proceed full speed ahead. Installation of the first pieces of equipment will start in late winter.

Following commissioning of the hull fabrication and painting workshops Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex will be capable of producing ship structures weighing up to 300 tons and vessels with a launching weight up to 13,000 tons. Upon implementation of Stage III, Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex will build tankers with a displacement of 350,000 tons downwards, LNG carriers, ice-rated vessels, specialized vessels, offshore rig components, and other types of marine structures.
